Coaching Experience: In the late 1990s and into the mid-2000s, Coach McConnell spent 12 of the 14 years working with various age groups (10-16) in the Cardinal AAU organization.

Coach McConnell has been with the Matrix since 2009 and 2011 will be his third year with the team that he started with as a 10U team. Under Coach McConnell's leadership the 10U Black team won the first ever Super Regional tournament for the Matrix in 2009 and the team defended its SRT championship in 2010. His 11U Black team won the bronze medal at Districts in 2010 and the team has competed in Division 1 AAU Nationals the last two seasons.

He also has high school coaching experience, spending 9 seasons as a Program assistant, Head JV Coach and Varsity assistant under Kenny Farmer at Mt. Vernon High School during the period that Mt. Vernon dominated girls’ basketball in Virginia’s National District winning 120+ consecutive district games.

More recently, Coach McConnell was the Head JV Coach at Forest Park High School in Prince William County. As part of his duties, Coach McConnell worked closely with Chrissy Kelly and the girls’ varsity team that won two AAA Virginia State Championships.

The 2010-2011 season will be Coach McConnell's second year as a head coach in the Arlington Travel Basketball program. In 2009-2010, he coached the 11-Under/6th Grade Division 1 team and he is scheduled to coach that same age group thi season.

Coaching Philosophy: Coach McConnell believes that hard work, mental & physical toughness, strong communication and individual skills are the foundation for successful players and teams. Coach McConnell believes in being aggressive on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.

Personal Background: Coach McConnell was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, but raised in Alexandria, VA. Coach McConnell received both his Bachelor’s degree (Psychology) and Masters (Education) from George Mason University. He has been an early childhood special education teacher in Arlington County for the past 7 years.

Matrix Organization: In addition to his coaching duties, Coach McConnell is also a member of the Club's Board of Directors.
